[DANCE/PHYSICAL THEATRE ~ NT]

The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Umbrella Revolution, Fri 22 Feb.

Twelve years ago Djuki Mala became YouTube sensations when their Zorba The Greek Yolngu-style video went viral, now sitting at 2.9 million views, it was the beginning of something special. Tonight’s performance began with troupe member Tibian giving a brief history of Djuki Mala, the beginnings and the hopes for the future.

This show is a merging of the traditional tribal dancing, modern dance, old school, Bollywood and freestyle, interspersed with big screen videos of friends and family from home. The highlight, for me, was the Michael Jackson Billie Jean tribute complete with the moon walk.

We are encouraged to make some noise and enjoy ourselves; this is not the place to sit back with our arms folded to appreciate the display which, of course, is not hard to do because their passion and sense of fun is highly contagious. While they are no Russian Ballet Company, there is no denying the skill and intensity in every set!

The boys of Djuki Mala are totally independent and have no government or private grants, so get out there and support a fabulous quartet of energy, enthusiastic, fabulous bunch of blokes! All in all, the night was a feast for the senses, with the music, the dancing and the big screen, I loved it!

4.5 stars
