Norwood Hotel, Fri 4 Mar

Sometimes the quality of a show rests solely on the interaction between audience and performers and tonight this audience loudly and decidedly voted this a five star Experience.

Young Neil and Aussie Bob take the audience on a trip through the classic songs of these two musical icons. It is moving to hear that both musicians have been fans of this music from a young age so that the performances are from a place of love not just a show and this comes through in the quality of the musicianship. The music is so familiar to the audience that the chords at the start of each song generate sighs of recognition and appreciation.

We begin the Experience with Dylan’s Shelter From The Storm’ followed by Neil Young’s Comes A Time. This is the pattern of the evening: alternating songs by each musician so that we hear an equal number of iconic tunes by Dylan and Young. Many of Dylan’s songs are from the ‘60s including protest songs which lose some of their power in this show due to a lack of explanation of the context or history of each song. These include Masters Of War and Blowin In The Wind. Other classics are there: the audience thoroughly enjoying Mr Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Desolation Row and Everybody Must Get Stoned.

Neil Young classics include My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue), Needle And The Damage Done, Out On The Weekend, and Rocking In the Free World.

Both Aussie Bob and Young Neil are excellent musicians, their guitar and harmonica playing at its best when they harmonise together. With the assistance of Quinton on bass they create a great quality sound that keeps the crowd fully engaged and tapping along. After a generous two hours the audience doesn’t want it to stop and are rewarded by two encores. It can’t get any better!
