Rhino Room – Upstairs, Thu Feb 12
Loved by Adelaide audiences for those hugely successful and mildly annoying RAA ads, George Kapiniaris returns to say goodbye to the state that unofficially adopted him as a local over 11 years ago. 70 ads later, it’s hard to believe Kapiniaris’ alter ego, RAA George will never whine “who can you trust?” on our small screens again. From now on we have to wait for Fringe time to get our ‘George-fix” and for the moment at least Kapiniaris milks his fame for all its worth.
The crowd was clearly delighted at the manic antics of a born show-off, happily blaming his demise on Rhonda and Ketut’s successes. An eighties tragic, Kapiniaris’ set included dodgy dance moves to a medley of songs from the era, each accompanied by a quick wig change and a pretty fabulous voice! Not much was missing from the show as Kapiniaris threw forth a rapid succession of topics, corny jokes, wordplays and dubious gags (the live back waxing we could have done without).
In the end, the guy is an SA pop-culture icon, up there with pie floaters and frog-cakes, and a terrific live performer to boot. His mouth moves at a million miles an hour when he’s on a roll, and all the audience can do is sit back and let the fun wash over them. In looking forward to the future, Kapiniaris laments the end of a pretty good gig, firing a few arrows at the RAA and even his old pal Trev.
Funniest moment? Watching him explain himself to a little old lady after the show… “Yes that’s right, they sacked me, that’s why I’m here doing this!” Gold!!!
