Gluttony – Empyrean, Sun 14 Feb
New kid on the block Fuego Carnal in the likewise new venue Empyrean, gets off to a great start with fire manipulator Steveo Extremo. I have been reviewing Fringe shows for many years and occasionally feel slightly jaded. That was certainly not the case here. The self-professed high risk extreme arts from around the world manages to be both jaw dropping and funny. The handling of fire throughout the entire show is simply stunning.
Steveo Extremo lives up to his name when he handles his fire as both a blessing and a curse, twirling without hesitation. When he lit up one end of his stick with fire left hanging in the air, the audience couldn’t quite believe their eyes. Unfortunately the hoopologist, Ruth Battle, made some easy mistakes and was a bit ruffled but everyone else performed at the highest standard, including high flying aerialist The Cats Meow, acrobats Dream State Circus and the phenomenal Mexican madman Pancho Libre who played with a giant hula hoop in which he stood, spun and generally went crazy to the audience’s delight.
Fuego Carnal is an intense burst of energy, highly recommended for anyone who is keen to see something new. Just a word of warning for people who don’t like loud music and those sensitive to smoke. However, the grumbles are minor and the positives are plentiful. It would not surprise me if Fuego Carnal becomes one of the hits of this year’s Fringe. It certainly would deserve it!
