La Bohème, Thu 4 Jun
Take a music trivia night, add a live band, choose geek rock as your theme, and if you’re lucky, you’ll come out with something like Geek Pop Quiz, the new show brought to you by the guys in Pan!c.
Upon arrival we were immediately invited to join a team and quickly had my geek rock mettle tested, and by geek rock, we’re talking about anyone who famously rocked horn-rimmed glasses, played particularly quirky songs, or is just generally known to have rocked out geekily.
The game works like this: Pan!c plays medleys of tracks with loose themes, and each team is tasked with identifying the artist responsible for each of the songs included, sometimes based on little more than a few measures, but still generally well-known enough to be fair.
Musical selections move chronologically from the ‘50s up through the ‘90s. Knowledge of Aussie and Kiwi hits won’t hurt, in addition to some familiarity with American and British fare. In between songs, trivia questions are added for bonus points, and Pan!c periodically break up the action with a straight run-through of a geeky track.
The band is sharp, playing a wide variety of songs with precision, frequently trading lead vocals and nonchalantly belting out impressive harmonies. Michael Hill plays the guitar and shoulders most of the hosting duties while singing lead on a majority of the songs. Paul Garner plays drums and often sings lead as well, particularly on the higher range material. Denis Surmon plays bass, sings harmony and occasionally pops up for a quick lead vocal.
The scorekeeping is casual and the atmosphere light-hearted and fun. I made friends at my table and we all pitched in to win some lollies and enjoy some great geeky hits delivered by a fun house band.
