Adelaide CBD, Mon Feb 16

Who doesn’t love a good ghost story? When you add a bit of crime and a dose of mystery, it seems that little ol’ Adelaide is full of ‘em. Who knew that not only are we the murder capital of Oz, but also manage to breed the most serial killers per capita in the entire world?

These tidbits and more were gleefully shared by our guide, Nicola, as we began our descent into the seedy, sinister and downright spooky side of our fair city’s CBD. Beginning at Adelaide Arcade, we learnt of the various grisly deaths visited upon hapless early residents and the ghostly spectres haunting this amazing building as a result. As we moved through the mall, onto Hindley Street and beyond, it became clear that Adelaide is literally peppered with an at times gruesome history that include poisonings, shootings, suicides and multiple mutilations.

This is a 2-hour walking tour but the pace was comfortable and our guide sensitive to the needs within her group. A drinks stop in a haunted hotel was a welcome chance to soak up the atmosphere before ending in the tunnels underneath our Treasury building – an obvious highlight of the tour for most. Nicola was knowledgeable, chatty and had a seemingly endless repertoire of chilly tales, ensuring the atmosphere was educational, fun and sometimes unnerving.

The company is professional in its care of guests and in the meticulous research undertaken to ensure information is as historically accurate as possible. Ghost Crime Tours run a number of tours including at Port Adelaide and Kapunda, and many in our group were keen to do these as well. Wear good shoes and bring a taste for the macabre with you.
