[MUSIC/Dance ~ WORLD PREMIERE ~ AUS]

The Moa (open air) at Gluttony, Fri 25 Feb.

Do you remember that thing you used to do back in the before times were you kind of moved around rhythmically to music? I mean it was ages ago and the memory of this activity may well have faded over the last two years or so, but I seem to recall that thing (maybe it was called ‘dancing’) was a quite pleasurable thing – right?

Well, tonight Adelaide’s favourite dance floor hero, Groove Terminator, reminded us of what we had been missing. GT brought the joy… the ecstatic explosive joy… of dancing back into our sad and dance-bereft lives that for two long years has been denied to us – an absence that has broken hearts, businesses, stolen incomes, careers, and removed that joy, the communal celebration and euphoric wonder of the dancing. Because tonight boys and girls, we got to dance. We danced our arses off.

Yes, we had to do it standing in front of our own seat. Yes we had to wear a mask. But we got to dance and it was fucking glorious.

Groove Terminator debuted his brand new show celebrating all the musical guises of Fat Boy Slim (aka Norman Cook). From the Housemartins, to Beats International, to The Mighty Dub Katz, to Pizzaman and of course the seemingly bottomless cup of Fatboy’s solid gold dance floor bangers.

And like he always does, GT takes all these elements and adds his own peer’s magic touch and gives us like the best mix tape imaginable. His skill as a DJ and party architect is without peer, and over ninety minutes under the stars in The Moa, he gives us so many Cook-related classics in rapid-fire succession, that it is exhausting and impossible to name them all.

BUT… here goes… Rockafella Skank, Praise You, Caravan Of Love, Going Out Of My Head, Eat Sleep Rave Repeat, Gangsta Trippin’, Yo Mama. It was just one dancefloor classics after another. But lest we forget all those songs by other artist that got the special FBS remix treatment like Brimful Of Asha (Cornershop), Body Movin’ (Beastie Boys) But some of the big moments tonight were a combination of GT’s skill, his eight-piece live choir (Adelaide Gospo Choir) adding live vocals arrangements and the stunning Slim themed visuals pumping people up even further.

It’s a great set and a brilliant show and I left with sore feet and a body screaming about aching muscles that I haven’t used for two years. We got to dance!!!

5 stars
