[MUSIC/EVENTS ~ SA PREMIERE ~ SA/VIC]

Gluttony – Masonic Lodge – Phoenix Room, Tue Feb 19.

With a career spanning more than 30 years in bands such as Adelaide’s Mad Turks From Istanbul, Icecream Hands, The Zhivagos, The Amateur Historians, as well as several solo albums, it was always going to be a big call to try to squeeze it all into a one hour show.

Onstage with long time musical cohort Douglas Lee Robertson, also originally from Adelaide, the songs are stripped back to two acoustic guitars. Opening with a number entitled Screaming Believers, Jenkins reveals a deep nostalgia for Adelaide in the days of Greasy Pop records. Songs like Café Istanbul and Holding My Breath recall this time.

The move to Melbourne resulted in Icecream Hands, probably the closest Jenkins has got to popular success. With so many songs to choose from, a highlight of the IceCream Hands’ material is My Mother Was A Dancer from the album The Good China.

Then The Zhivagos, with songs like Rich Rich Country demonstrating Jenkins’ lyrical prowess. The Amateur Historians write songs about Melbourne. The pick for me tonight is Victoria Market.

Small Dreams, a song about Adelaide written with Kelly Menhennett, is a showstopper. The hour ends with The Zhivagos’ hilarious Pray My Dear Daughter.

A full evening of Charles Jenkins highlights would be a five star experience. Trying to squeeze it all into an hour has Jenkins rushing the between-song patter and constantly checking his watch, seeming unsure what to play next. We all know there are many more great songs not on the list and wish the show could go for longer.

It’s a mystery to me why these men are not a little closer to being household names. If you have any interest in Australian music you should be rushing along to catch Charles Jenkins and Douglas Lee Robertson. Wonderful!
