[STAND UP / COMEDY ~WORLD PREMIERE ~ VEN]

The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Studio 7, Sun 24 Feb.

Ivan Aristeguieta was the winner of the Best Weekly Comedy at the Adelaide Fringe in 2017 and since then he has gone from strength to strength, with appearances on TV shows such as Have You Been Paying Attention and Hughsey We Have A Problem making him part of Australian comedy royalty.

Following a successful world tour in 2018, Aristeguieta is back at the Adelaide Fringe with his new show, The Fourth Floor. Aristeguieta is from Venezuela, where, when you hit 40 years of age, you are said to be on the Fourth Floor. The show is ostensibly about that, but of course, as stand-up comedy does, it takes that concept as a starting position from which to cover much broader ground. Much of Aristeguieta’s show sits in the clash of cultures between Australia and Venezuela. Aristeguieta has lived in Australia for seven years and this has given him a vantage point from which to observe the differences between his third-world homeland and his first-world adopted home.

Aristeguieta doesn’t push into crass, mean, rude comedy the way some comedians do. His is cheek-hurting, laugh-a-minute, grin-with-recognition comedy that somehow always stays relatively polite. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not virginal or squeaky clean. There are porn jokes, fart jokes, boob jokes and it’s a bit sweary, but underneath it all is the sense that Aristeguieta is not out for cheap laughs. He doesn’t get his kicks from putting others down. It’s an intoxicating mix – genuine belly laughs without the nasty edge that some comedians rely too much on.

The Fourth Floor is bound to be another hit for Aristeguieta, and he can bring me a cup of tea anytime! (You’ll have to see the show to know what that’s about!)
