ComedySuperNova’s Mars Room, Sat Feb 21

Jimmy McGhie was in fine form at the Mars Room, despite a light dose of laryngitis. He has been coming to Australia and Adelaide Fringe for a few years now and his insightful observations are sprinkled through the show. He is familiar enough with Adelaide that he can hold a mirror up to our local culture, casting us in a different light. Particularly our 4-tonne free bikes in comparison to our carbon fibre road terrors, public transport and having access to Avocados ready to eat etc.

Given the four-noun title, I would suggest that really only the second featured to any great extent, though to be fair the audience had plenty of laughter and happiness along with Jimmy. Sharp on his feet, ready to bounce off the audience at every opportunity, positively engaging with us (even with the hecklers), Jimmy is clearly at home behind the microphone and is a master of working improvised comedy into his routines.

Some of the highlights were the playing out of sexual stereotypes, particularly the differences between the repressed English and the rather free Brazilians; the comparison of the physical presence of his repressed British self, to his mojo filled Brazilian the next.

An accomplished comic and performer – if you’d like a few good belly laughs, Jimmy McGhie is ready, willing and able to deliver.
