The Garden Of Unearthly Delights’ Aurora Spiegeltent, Tue Mar 10

As an Australian music industry icon, (and recent inductee into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame!), Kate Ceberano is much loved by audiences across the country. With great anticipation then, the packed Spiegeltent awaited her arrival onstage. Firstly, she looks magnificent – the woman is a goddess that just gets better with age – but of course it’s THAT voice we were all waiting for.

Kate arrives to a warm reception and promises her audience some beautiful music that would challenge her, and stimulate them. For the most part she did deliver on that promise, ongoing technical issues notwithstanding. Unfortunately recalcitrant keyboard leads interrupted the intended flow although Kate managed the problem with aplomb.

Starting the show with Brave got the party started, followed by a fun rendition of Don Walker’s Party whilst showing her musical skills throughout the night, playing keyboard and percussion alongside some impressive acoustic bass. I Don’t Know How to Love Him was a highlight as her honeyed tones filled the tent –few performers can tell a story quite like Kate. She then delivered a fabulous medley of Fleetwood Mac hits including Songbird and Landslide in a homage to her teenage dedication to a favourite cassette tape.

Toward the end the momentum was lost as continued audience interaction sometimes overwhelmed the music and I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed that there was no real ‘huge’ moment. As a finale Bedroom Eyes was an obvious choice and she did receive a standing ovation, but personally I was left looking for something more.
