Latino Grooves Dance Studio, Sun Mar 1
This is Latino Grooves’ first Fringe event and they went all-out with a live Latin band to help the ‘newbies’ get into the groove. It was a practical introductory dancing lesson, and also a peek into Latino music culture, as we learnt about the different types of musical instruments – including the Congas, which were the main percussion, and the Cajon drum that a drummer sits on.
We were trained to hear the 4/4 Latin beat, then it was into the simple dance steps – (forwards) 1, 2, 3, pause, (backwards) 5,6,7, pause. Or sideways, or in circles! No need for a partner or fancy clothes, we had a go at the Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, and Bachata.
While catching our breath, we were treated to a performance of the Brazilian Samba – which is FAST!! Dressed in amazing costumes reminiscent of a street festival, the girls were cheeky and inspiring. Playfully we tried to copy, but it might take another couple of lessons to reach their standard!
A fun session.
