Gluttony – Empyrean, Wed 2 Mar

Three sweet, demure young women wait for their husbands to come home – dutifully cleaning, doing housework and even baking a cake. We are in the world of the ‘50s with lovely dresses, aprons and heels. Nostalgia is high with a bright and bouncy soundtrack that showcases the hits of the ‘50s and even earlier. The women get bored and begin to play, teasing the audience and involving the obligatory volunteers.Les Femmes Circus - The Clothesline

The women of Les Femmes Circus combine dance, acrobatics, circus skills and a dash of synchronised showgirl to recast these housewives as something more. They show off their strength and physical skills high above the audience on hoops, straps and ropes. The young audience holds its breath as our performers hang and tumble, making human pyramids and flipping across the stage. They balance on poles, their strength defying the apparent passivity of their ‘50s appearance. It is all performed with humour and cheekiness as they engage the audience and show us their wild side. The acts are linked by a story told through music and mime and hints of an English summer by the sea.

Amazingly throughout the show their ‘50s ponytails stay intact and their smiles never fade. The mostly female and young audience enjoyed this nostalgic journey with a modern twist.
