Light. Camera. Action: The LIVE Lightpainting Experience

The Soul Box, Wed Mar 4.

Light painting artist/photographer Vicki Ferguson (Vix) is back once again to share her skills and passion with a wholly fascinated audience. Using a camera set to long exposure, a big projection screen, light sabres, sparklers, bicycle wheels and audience members, Ferguson crafts visually striking imagery live on stage before our very eyes. Tech geeks will love it of course but as Vix explains, this show isn’t about the technical ‘how to’ of light painting photography. Her goal is to make the creation of these photographs an intrinsic part of the art experience and just as important as the final product itself.

Her stage presence is relaxed and she is fascinating to watch as she makes her way around the stage twirling torches and all manner of other sparkly things to produce some remarkable images, the results of which can be found on the show’s website. Audience participation is a requisite, and volunteers couldn’t wait to get onstage and be a part of the fun.

Look out for Harry Potter’s Patronus Charm and in a unique shift from last year, Vix closes her show with an actual light painting sequence sans camera, using torches to ‘paint’ on canvas treated with luminous paint. Images appeared and faded in and around one another, creating a dreamscape that was simply beautiful. This was helped in no small way by Instrumentalist Paul Danger McLean’s electronic music (including a Theremin!) that really enhanced the entire performance experience for the audience. In short, this is a fascinating show that will satisfy the artist/geek/muso/tech head in everyone.
