[FESTIVAL/Light ~ Family Event ~ AUS]

Adelaide Zoo, Sun 10 Jul.

Full credit must go to Adelaide Zoo and Illuminate Adelaide for this enterprising collaborative endeavour. I am still amazed at the numbers of people who like to go outside on a cold winter’s night and do something different. Light Creations invites the general public to enjoy Adelaide’s zoo in the dark, and take in the charm of a number of installations dotted around the park. Each installation is brilliantly lit and accompanied by ambient music. My favourite was Underwater Wonderland with jellyfish bobbing up and down above the heads of the crowd creating the impression that you were beneath the surface. Cahaya The Tiger was a star attraction as they slowly made their way around the park but the large crowd that followed on made it hard to get a close look.

Those areas within Adelaide Zoo that remained open to the public were equipped with stalls to buy donuts, drinks and hamburgers to help create a festive atmosphere. Most of the animals were asleep and out of sight at this hour, but the pelicans were certainly up and enjoying all the attention.

Unlike the Light Cycles event in the Botanic Garden where much louder music and light projections combine to transport you to a world of wonder, Light Creatures is a more of a pleasant family experience. As charming as it is the quiet, ambient nature of the music sometimes gets lost amid the hubbub of excited children, but they barely seem to mind.

It was busy but not too crowded so one could mostly keep the correct social distance. Not so much an opportunity to appreciate the work of the featured artists, but this is definitely a fun event for families and children. The raised walkway in the playground was a huge hit! And it was a joy to see everybody out and enjoying this chilly night in Adelaide.

3.5 stars
