The Garden Of Unearthly Delights’ Aurora Spiegeltent, Tue Feb 24
At the high end of the Fringe another circus is back in town – the kind that forgoes performing animals, freak shows and colourful clowns in favour of the acrobats. LIMBO is a jaw-dropping showcase of what highly-trained human bodies can do.
The first act to inspire awe is a contortionist who is able to manipulate his body in so many seemingly impossible ways, and yet it is done with such apparent ease it seems normal not freaky. There are amazing handstands and balancing acts, an impressive tap dancing workout, and a gravity-defying pole routine to set the pulse racing.
But wait, there’s more! There is also some spectacular fire-breathing and sword swallowing, which becomes particularly astonishing when an illuminated sword can be seen through the skin of the artiste’s neck. A performance on a ladder engulfed in flames adds to the spectacle.
The jaw firmly reaches the floor towards the end when the cast climb atop high flexible poles and sway back and forth from the outer reaches of the audience to meet together at the centre of the stage. A number of apparent-near misses shows just how much calculated precision is required here, but again it’s done with a cheeky confidence that belies any risk involved.
The music is performed by a band on stage, led by an eccentric-looking ringmaster, which adds considerably to the carnival energy of the show. Such is the agility, athleticism and exuberance with which all of tonight’s feats are performed, that you’d have to be a bit jaded not to be highly entertained.
