[COMEDY/Stand-up ~ SA]

Drama Llama at Rhino Room, Thu 3 Mar.

Lori Bell (no relation) has been doing this comedy lark for a long time. She wins awards, has been in a TV show and tours nationally. She does characters, stand-up and is a killer MC. She is really good at it. But Making Babies might just be the best thing she has ever done.

A more personal and raw show than might be expected from the performer responsible for (close personal friend) Granny Flaps, Making Babies perpetually oscillates between the hysterically funny and the heart-breakingly sad, and back again. It’s the story of falling in love, getting married and wanting to start a family, but when neither you nor your spouse have a penis, getting pregnant poses different obstacles to others in a similar situation.

Making Babies is a love story (a really fucking strong and moving one) of hope, determination, IVF programmes, utterly ridiculous situations (the recalling their first attempt with ‘man juice’ was met with a hysterical response), crushing sadness and euphoric celebration (spoiler alert – eventually everything comes together). It’s quite the ride.

I love Bell’s ‘game on, moles!’ material – and it’s not like there is none of that here – but this is next level stuff. Lori Bell takes us on a really personal and emotional journey, talking us through all that pain and joy while deftly keeping us laughing with her and rooting for her and her family. Extraordinary stuff!

5 stars
