The Garden Of Unearthly Delights’ Vagabond, Tue Feb 17

The Magnets’ new show is a one hour highlight reel: hit after hit, reinvented into a cappella, in arrangements often better than the original. This year the much-loved six-piece singing group decided to stick to uber contemporary songs–nothing over two years old – and the result is a show that plays like a greatest hits of up-beat, make-you move UK Top 40 tracks: Pharrell William’s Happy, Ed Sheeran’s Sing, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk. There are slower moments too: Mumford and Sons’ I Will Wait and an utterly stunning version of the Sam Smith mega-hit Stay With Me, layered with heavy drum bass from vocal-percussionist Andy Frost, giving the song a darker edge that works perfectly.

The infectious energy of the group, amazing depth and complexity of sound they create with just their voices, coupled with fun, energetic songs is a winning combination.

Each of the guys has his moment to shine: Fraser’s interpretation of Sing is a sexy, funny, joyful gift and Michael Welton’s Stay With Me is heartbreakingly beautiful. Andy’s beatboxing drum-solo interlude is simply mind-blowing and had the lazy Tuesday-night crowd in raptures.

Individually, The Magnets are inspired and spectacular; together they are sublime.

Take your kids, take your granny! Take all of your friends and their friends too. Smiles are guaranteed. Dancing in your seats will be involuntary. This is a cappella skills like you never thought possible.

Discover for yourself why everyone loves The Magnets!
