Space Theatre, Fri 12 Feb
Zac Tyler and Michaela Burger popped the fringe cherries for most of the audience tonight with their intimate song cycle featuring the music of composer Jason Robert Brown. Moving Too Fast is summed up nicely in the opening song of the same name from the musical The Last Five Years; our relationships, societal pressures and life in general moving too fast.
Zac Tyler and Michaela Burger are both brilliant singers who know exactly how to create beautiful touching moments on-stage. Supported by talented Adelaide musicians Mark Ferguson (piano), Alana Dawes (bass) and Jarred Payne (drums), the music of New York composer Jason Robert Brown really shone brightly tonight. Highlights included, You Don’t Know This Man with Michaela’s powerful vocals and Zac executed a hilarious rendition of Someone Like You (Irish Girl). The two were brilliant when singing together in songs such as, Still Hurting and Coming Together.
There was some amusing variety brought by Michaela as she climbed through the audience screaming for her partner Murray, but overall the show could have done with more unpredictability or variation because the audience doesn’t have a context to completely connect with the lyrics like they usually would in, for example, a full musical. This is not to say that it wasn’t an enjoyable show though with excellent music.
It is great to have the Adelaide Festival Centre being part of the Adelaide Fringe. The set, lighting and sound were professional and added to the mood created by Michaela, Zac and the band.
Jason Robert Brown fans will not want to miss this opportunity to see his music performed by two great Adelaide cabaret performers.
