Mr Goodbar, Wed 14 Feb.
[INTERACTIVE/CRAFT – SA]
Mr Goodbar on Union Street is part of the East End Market Complex. We entered what seemed to be a small intimate bar for just a few people but soon realised that this funky, awesome little place, had stairs that lead up past the amenities on level two and further on to what opens in to a large bar and eating area with a great view of the East End.
It was here that we met and surprised Ryan, our bartender extraordinaire. Surprised, because he actually didn’t know we and five others were attending this evening to take part in a class he was teaching on how to make an ‘Old Fashioned Cocktail’.
Once over his initial surprise, Ryan showed us each not only how to make an Old Fashioned Cocktail the Mr Goodbar way, with flair, flames and orange oil, he also showed us how to make the same cocktail at home. We also learnt how to change the recipe of an ‘Old Fashioned’ to suit our own personal tastes.
Our very approachable mixologist Ryan who was friendly, informative and who was happy to share anything he knew on the subject of cocktails, encouraged us to ask questions. He shared the history of the Old Fashioned (named such as it was the first known cocktail to be created) as well as his insights on some of the rare and unusual spirits that were glowing on the bar behind him.
We left Mr Goodbar almost two hours later glowing also, with some extra rum in the tum and armed with everything we needed to know to make an ‘Old Fashioned’ when we got home.
A lot of fun and frivolity was had, but some serious learning was done too. There are five more weeks of classes, with The Martini, The Manhattan, The Negroni and Tiki Drinks on the future menu. If you have ever wondered how to make… now is your chance to join in on a fun and informative class.
