Gluttony’s Lotus Palace, Fri Feb 13

Christopher Wayne and Mike Tyler are the Naked Magicians. The excited chatter outside The Lotus Palace before the show even started from the group on ‘a girls night’ told me that this audience were all lined up and ready for some magic… or lined up waiting for nakedness more like it.

What The Naked Magicians do, they do well. If you would like to see some magic, you won’t be disappointed, and if you want to see a penis or two, well then you won’t be disappointed either. Sleight-of-hand and misdirection are used well in this show and although I understand that the show needs to travel ‘light’ to tour the world as it does, I couldn’t help but feel they were a little exposed, excuse the pun, due to the very sparse staging and lack of props. Whilst it was obvious that we were all enjoying the show, especially the girls in the front row who were raising their hands every time volunteers were called for or squealing ‘drop the hat’, I still would have preferred to see a little more lighting effects and maybe even some ‘smoke and mirrors’ as I found their need to go behind a table slightly distracting.

From the get go, this show relies on audience participation and this audience certainly participated. From discovering what our very own personal porno names were and watching right through to the explosive end, this audience was encouraged to join in on the fun, and fun is what we all had.
