[Comedy/Storytelling ~ VIC~ SA PREMIERE]

Basement at Secret Basement @ WEA, Mon 26 Feb, 2024.

Nick Robertson’s show is billed as storytelling rather than stand-up comedy but it is laugh out loud funny all the same. Rather than a series of unrelated jokes or the blustering self promotion you sometimes see in stand-up, we are treated to a tightly crafted, self-deprecating retelling of the time Nick is denied entry into Edinburgh when he was 22.

There are lots of funny asides and life observations along the way that have the audience laughing in recognition and concern. Especially amusing detours include some idiosyncratic guest behaviours at a house party and a hilarious mishap at a primary school disco. A few running gags involving Candy Crush, Scooby Doo 2 and his mother also add to the fun.

Robertson’s ability to build and to layer his story is noteworthy. His gift for wordplay and ability to underpin the humour with emotion, along with  his engaging, friendly manner are keys to the success of tonight’s show. He presents a slightly nervous almost goofy persona which makes it easy to identify with him. It is first night and he keeps a running score of whether something resonates with the audience or doesn’t quite hit the mark which adds to the apparent sincerity. His treatment by British border control for not having the correct work permits is almost unbelievable but serves as a reminder that being branded an illegal immigrant is never a laughing matter.

This show has won a Melbourne Fringe Award and Robertson is a 2024 Adelaide Fringe Fund Recipient. Allow a few extra minutes to find the very Secret Basement, but grab some friends and bring them to see Nick Robertson. You won’t be disappointed!
