Grace Emily Hotel, Sat Feb 21
Two members of Adelaide band Brillig were so inspired by a recent visit to Nashville that they have put together this fond tribute to Music City, including a number of songs they have written for the show, as well as songs by people who have made Nashville their home over the years. Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash – all of the expected names show up at some point. However the show is saved from being a nostalgia fest by including the original songs and also songs by people who currently work from Nashville, acknowledging that it is still a tough business to get a break in – Jack White (The White Stripes) and gosh, even Miley Cyrus!
To keep things bubbling along there are special guests, including Aliese Millington (AKA Leigh Stardust), Tristan Newsome and Beej Barker who each add their magic to the celebration. As might be expected from a Brillig gig, detailed attention has been paid to the costumes and attractive merchandise table.
The new Brillig songs are excellent and stand up well against the other songs being played. If there is one concern it would be that some of the cover songs are not in the best key for the singer. But the spirit of the event is what is important, and by making their show about Nashville they have attracted a wider audience of country music fans not familiar to Brillig who are singing along with their favourite songs.
Brillig performs A Night In Nashville at Grace Emily Hotel on Sat Feb 28 [SOLD OUT].
