La Bohème – Upstairs, Sat Mar 7

What do Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Eva Cassidy, Kurt Cobain, Freddy Mercury, Lisa Lopes, Simone Battle, Cass Elliot and Amy Winehouse all have in common? They all died before their time… or did they?

Did they perhaps complete what they were here to do? Destined to only be here long enough to leave us with music which will live on in their place forever?

Jessica Papst, and her pianist Shannon, perform music from each artist (and more, in case I have forgotten) of this ‘club made in heaven’. Jessica links the songs with musings of her own in regards to the ‘why’ these members have gained access to this exclusive club, along with the misconceptions and true facts around their deaths.

Jessica is obviously passionate about the subject matter and has put together a neat little package of songs and stories with some different but lovely interpretations of the songs this famous group have left behind.

Shannon played beautifully for Jessica, and without written music. In a move unusual for a répétiteur, Shannon committed his accompaniment to memory, allowing him to listen and truly add to Jessica’s performance as she, in turn, performed as her mood felt at any singular moment.

This duo performs great interpretations of these songs, so if you love the music of this special group, then get along and see this show. You won’t be disappointed.
