Gluttony’s The Lotus Palace, Fri Feb 13
There is certainly a lot to enjoy in Papillon. Tonight’s performance included balancing on multiple chairs from large heights, juggling and acrobatics and all accompanied by a variety of recorded and live music. Many of the acts demonstrated incredible skill and each of the six performers have their own unique talents.
Tonight’s opening night performance was a bit hit-and-miss. It didn’t get off to a great start with the venue running 45-minutes late and therefore the performers unfairly needed to try even harder to get their audience engaged and excited. Sound, lighting issues and having a 15-minute interval didn’t help either.
All of that aside, there were some great moments that the audience thoroughly enjoyed, like the beach-themed balancing act, which had a perfect level of comedy and talent. Other highlights were the strength and flexibility in the female duo and the comedy-infused juggling act.
There were a few odd choices for some of the acts, and although a lot of effort and thought has gone into the show, overall it just didn’t execute to create that ‘wow’ factor that you want from circus and physical theatre. It is a long season, so it should improve with more performances.
