In order to complete his own off-stage introduction, the haphazard, eccentric Paul Foot appears on stage and attempts to find a microphone that works. He then spends some time chatting to his audience, explaining that this is really still “pre-show” and that he’ll describe some of the things that didn’t make it into his performance; pieces that have been axed because they are too childish, too lengthy, or two adult-oriented.

A quarter of an hour passes and the punters are in stitches. One person has been “mounted” by Foot; most others are glad that they weren’t the “lucky” one. But it’s all good fun and we are ready to enter the show proper. Despite being in the show proper from the moment Foot appeared from behind the curtain…

Hovercraft Symphony In Gammon # Major features a non-stop stream of tales borne from Foot’s impressive imagination, including stories of bed-and-breakfast revenge, haute cuisine dumped into the toilet cistern, and of attempted assassinations of sports stars. He moves quickly through his material, jumping from one piece to the next, rarely bothering with anything resembling a punch-line.

Foot’s precise and deliberate impression of being somewhat hapless and underprepared works a treat. He rummages through his bag, repeats himself, aimlessly wanders around the stage (and occasionally off it). This is absurdity at an assured level. He knows exactly where he is, and what he is saying, at all times. He’s almost breathless; the audience loves it, chuckling and guffawing throughout the show.

After an hour of relentless top-notch tomfoolery, Foot concludes with some novel insights into air travel before bounding off stage and into the darkness.
