UPSTAIRS AT THE RHINO ROOM, Wed 08 Mar

For the last three years former head bad boy of the Doug Anthony All Stars has been invading the Adelaide Fringe at Adelaide’s home of comedy all year round The Rhino Room. McDermott is always great but with his musical foil +1 (Glenn Moorehouse aka Cocaine Bear) evil Uncle Paul has found a perfect partner, who seems to have reinvigorated his creative output and supercharged these shows.

There is going to be swearing, confronting concepts, and some might think it’s not for the faint hearted. But it bloody is. He tells up right up front that the show will cover the fall of Empire, The Rise of Women and wanking. True to his word the opening part of the show will certainly upset any monarchists who stumble in. I mean between howls of I-can’t-believe-they-sang-that laughter. There is a song suggesting that the royal they are about to make king might not be the best choice but have another suggestion I very much liked. There’s a smashing quasi- Elvis number called One Night In Mar-a-Largo from two perspectives and a disturbing tale about going to a health spa. There are two songs about the ladies which see Paul exercising his outrageous muscle like Mr Universe.

Outside on the street the show continues in a busking fashion with, people trying to get out of their student accommodation sporadically becoming stars of the show. For the last two years Paul McDermott +1 has consistently been my Number 1 favourite Fringe show pick. It’s worth going more than once because their show changes and morphs and the audience interaction is magnificent. This year makes a hat trick. Naughty fun of the highest calibre.
