The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – The Spiegeltent, Thu 18 Feb

The Spiegeltent was packed to its gorgeous rafters and rocking with laughter Thursday night at Peter Helliar’s sold-out show, One Hot Mess. A highly accomplished TV personality, he is also a Master of stand-up comedy. Peter’s appeal comes largely from his ‘ordinariness’. His self-deprecating humour and accessible, friendly delivery dissolve any distance between performer and audience and we are welcomed into his crazy, messy life like friends sharing a beer at the bar.

With terrific reflections on the challenges of being a husband and father, the indignity of being considered an ‘old fart’ at forty, and a fantastic theory tying technology to Christian creation-ism, Peter Helliar’s show is jam-packed with hilarious punchlines and delightfully real reactions. Netball and Pilates will never be the same again after being mashed together with Game Of Thrones, creative waxing and an addiction to Macca’s.

Even stepping into the intimate zones of adulthood, Hellier is clever enough to expose himself… so to speak… through his wonderful ability to set a bizarre scene, then, using very skilful facial expression, intonation and timing, let our imaginations fill in the hilarious details.

To make people laugh is a great gift. To allow people to laugh at themselves through sharing your own foibles and failings is as good as therapy. Helliar’s humour is healing. He allows us to laugh at our own messy lives by sharing the intimacies of his, warts and all. No matter how you feel before this show, you will feel great after. Masterfully funny!

It’s selling out fast so get in quick. You won’t regret it.
