Rhino Room – Beer Garden

Armed with his guitar, a loop pedal and soulful voice, Ryan Coffey takes to the stage to tell us the tales of his break up and why he always requires adult supervision. The show starts as he loops a vocal refrain, adding as he goes, until he is ready to start the song and blows everyone away with his powerful voice. Jumping from short bursts of stand-up to song, Coffey also showcases his song writing abilities.

Between songs we are intermittently told about tales of his break-up six months ago, living with passive aggressive females, his time on Tinder, the key to keeping a relationship going (lies) and a detailed account of how he ended up in another man’s painting overalls. However, these moments of stand-up seem quite light-hearted in comparison to the tales he tells through his songs. He says it’s not a sad show despite being about a semi-recent breakup and while Coffey puts a comedic spin on things, it’s still kind of sad.

Beat is a mix of comedy, song and sadness. The songs and Coffey’s voice were equal parts amazing and delightfully surprising, and the stand-up parts were pretty damn funny. Something to go and see if you want a bit of everything.
