Royal Croquet Club – The Panama Club, Sat 14 Feb

It’s not hard to find an impressive acrobatic display at the Adelaide Fringe, but it is hard to find an acrobatic display that is as cohesive, complete and exciting as Scotch & Soda. The team that brought you Cantina have created an energy-packed mix of genuinely thrilling, gasp-inducing acrobatics, blended it with a perfectly executed speakeasy vibe and added the best musical accompaniment you can hope to see this Fringe.

The result: perfection.

The high energy, look-away, white-knuckle acrobatics are seamlessly integrated with cheeky (yes, the bum kind) gags and enchanting quiet moments where the musicians shine (although, to be honest, there wasn’t a moment of the 70-minute show where the Uncanny Carnival Band didn’t shine. They are worth the ticket price alone). The energy from the crowd, who were cheering, clapping and at times out of breath with excitement accompanied the energy coming from the stage and must have helped the performers along.

Sheer fear is always a plus in a live show – to truly wonder, with your heart in your throat, if the performer can get themselves out of this pickle without broken bones is an addictive kind of thrill, and Scotch & Soda has it in spades. But Scotch & Soda is more than this – the artistry of the acrobats and musicians is what makes it stand out as a work of mesmerising skill and beauty.
