The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Campanile, Fri 26 Feb.

Shirley Gnome has found her people -a country where it is welcomed (sometimes even encouraged) to use the ‘c-bomb’ – and she is taking full advantage of it. She brings a new sound to The Fringe this year in the form of country music.

Performing with just an acoustic guitar and her amazing voice, she takes the recognisable sounds of country but adds the twist of very adult lyrics to humorous and wicked effect. She performs catchy original songs, including Ménage a Twat, Are you 22? and Womanhood, and as you may have guessed, they all relate to the joys and adventures of sex. Whether it is about the importance of masturbation, spooning, or the joys of coming home to the person you love, Shirley has got you covered. The lyrics were clever and funny, and everyone in the audience – whether man or woman – will relate to them.

Even if you are not a fan of country music, Shirley and her songs will charm you and have you singing along by the end of the show. She has a beautiful voice and engaged well with the audience. Wearing a pink bedazzled cowboy hat (with a bedazzled pink flask to match) she commands the stage.

In between her music she tells a few jokes, cleverly segueing between each number. While she speaks about the inspiration for her songs, and asks about audience member’s backgrounds, she never puts them on the spot or makes them feel uncomfortable. In fact, she treats you as a friend, and by the end of the show you felt like you had known Shirley for years.

Clever, honest and downright mischievous at times, Shirley Gnome: C*untry Music sings it like it is – and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Elizabeth Harnett
