Gluttony – The Peacock, Fri 17 Feb.

After their successful 2015 Fringe Festival season, SOAP is back in Adelaide and judging by tonight’s packed crowd, shows will once again sell out quickly. Combining contemporary circus, physical theatre, cabaret and comedy, SOAP is soaked in enough enjoyable ingredients to please everyone.

The physical acrobatic skill of the performers is showcased immediately in the opening number – Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy with added live SOAP - Adelaide Fringe 2017 - The Clotheslineopera singing. The flexibility and strength of the performers is incredible to watch as they move and balance themselves in and around the bathtubs, which is all timed perfectly to the music for maximum impact. There is no point in an empty bathtub, so water starts to flow from the roof in the later acts and adds a beautiful visual spectacle as well as the fun of the front half of the audience getting wet. The performers are incredibly fit and ensure the audience is enjoying seeing the water dripping down their abs.

As well as the balancing and contorting in the bathtub, there was also astonishing aerial routines, comical juggling with arms and balls going everyone and a cheeky naked routine from the guys with very careful towel placements. There was some fun clowning around by the female comedian who got maximum laughs with exaggerated physical movements and facial expressions. The music was also enhanced by live opera singing, with one of the shows highlights being the added lyrics to Strauss, Beethoven and The Beatles songs with references to the consistent bathtub theme.

Lighting and sound issues should improve as the season continues, but there really isn’t anything else to fault in this tightly rehearsed show. SOAP will be a big hit again this Fringe.
