[THEATRE & PHYSICAL THEATRE/Puppetry ~ CAN]

The Chapel at Migration Museum, Thu 2 Mar, 2023.

A startling start sets off this fun frolic with a deadly serious message about accepting those we may otherwise deem strange and abnormal for whoever they are. We may not understand them, and therefore fear this ‘otherness,’ but we can respect and embrace them as they add their strength and power to the community. Playfulness and complete openness is a potent combination, and Something In The Water creates a safe playground to dive deep into the wide, unexplored gulf between the two polarities of socially-approved gender.

Wherever you dance between this divide we call the sexes you will enjoy this, one of the funniest shows around town. The belly-laughs and calls from the audience are genuine signs of support for this highly entertaining performer. The story has us along for the ride into the realms of fantasy, but we are all old enough to know that monsters are a metaphor for the inner fears we find it difficult to face. The puppetry work is very tongue in cheek, and spot on to highlight the conventional, convenient myths built up surrounding gendered toys, clothes, colours, roles, etc.

And yes, spoiler alert, there are sex scenes. These are disarmingly delightful, at least in the adult show – there is also a kids-friendly version of this story on offer. Wrapping important points in such enjoyable antics makes for most exceptional theatre. Grumms has us soon wondering whether all the ideas about gender we’ve grown up with are but beliefs we all pretend to agree on, simply because it’s the narrative driven by the majority. We miss the wide spectrum in-between the two extremes. Now these seem like two lands on either side of a wide ocean. Thankfully there is Something In The Water, this vehicle to not only ferry us across, but to also let us swim with the myriad of life living there in plain sight.

4.5 Stars
