Davine Interventionz Productions has presented quality musical theatre productions for Adelaide festivals in recent years and The Story Of My Life continues that commendable tradition. Director and Producer David Gauci has ensured this Australian premiere production will be remembered and remain in the hearts and minds of its audience. The Story Of My Life - Feast Festival - The Clothesline

With music and lyrics by Neil Bartram and book by Brian Hill, The Story Of My Life begins with frustrated writer Thomas Weaver returning to his home town to deliver the eulogy for his childhood best friend Alvin Kelby. Stories from the mind of Thomas are pulled out of the bookshelf by the departed Alvin refreshing Thomas’ memory of the intense bond the two had together as children. It begins with their first meeting unified together as the two odd kids by their favourite teacher Mrs Remington, follows their journey throughout childhood and their ongoing goodbyes. There is also a continuous attempt by Alvin to ensure Thomas accepts and processes the story of their final meeting one week prior at Alvin’s father’s funeral.

David Salter as Alvin and Paul Rodda as Thomas are perfectly cast and gel together onstage superbly. Salter has a nice mix of playful eccentricity and calm curiously when sitting back observing Thomas on his journey. Salter is an experienced professional who maintained his composure even when his pants awkwardly split.

Paul Rodda displayed a determined and up-tight character, with great contrasting glimpses of childhood silliness. Rodda’s voice sounded wonderful and it would have to be the best I have ever seen him perform.

Under the direction of Peter Johns, the nine-piece orchestra sounded fantastic bringing Neil Bartram’s music to life. The sound mix was spot-on, as was the execution of all the technical elements at tonight’s opening night performance.

The lighting design was innovative and nicely fitted the mood of the moment most of the time, but it was sometimes distracting. I would rethink the painted books also on the set, but overall the simple set worked well with a bright white and cream across the stage allowing the focus to be on the two actors.

Make sure you don’t miss the fantastic Australian premiere of this beautiful musical!
