[BOOK REVIEW]

Marita Bullock and Joan-Maree Hargreaves (Hachette Australia) 2021, 57pp, RRP $29.99

Bullock, Hargreaves and illustrator Liz Rowland’s lovely tome is short and sweet, and although apparently intended for children it’s, nevertheless, surely appealing enough for just about anyone.

A tiptoe through the many and colourful festivals of the world, this includes entries upon: Anastenaria, Northern Greece’ firewalking ritual; the birthday of Guru Nanak, a founding father of Sikhism; Bunya Dreaming on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast (on January 26 if you’d like to attend next year); ‘Carnevale Di Venezia’, of course; Mexico’s ‘Día De Muertos’; India’s always fabulous Diwali; Konaki Sumo, the Japanese crying-baby festival; and, naturally, good old Easter and Christmas.

It’s all straightforward yet entertaining stuff, and it should make you nostalgic for a pre-COVID-19 time when we could freely travel around the world. And maybe we will again sometime.

Maybe…
