[CABARET ~ SA]
Wonderland Spiegeltent Festival Hub, Fri 12 Mar.
Beccy Cole and Libby O’Donovan appear to be a match made in heaven. Certainly appearing to really enjoy each other’s company on stage they have great fun parading their own genres (country music for Beccy and showtunes/cabaret for Libby) and often mix them up into the same song. The classic Dolly Parton tune Jolene is book-ended with some operatic treatment that takes its to another place that is a bit strange, but also a lot of fun.
Fun is an important element in this show. Right from the start when O’Donovan’s Secret Love is revealed to be something more than a song there are plenty of laughs. Cole in particular seems very at home in the comedy role, but O’Donovan’s demonstration of what cabaret sounds like sung with an Australian accent was also really funny.
Cole invited her Mum up to do a song – the former South Australian Queen of Country Music – Carol Sturtzel, and she was not out of place at all.
I loved the song Cole wrote for O’Donovan – Back To Broken Hill, and the final ‘Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better’ routine as they took turns steering the focus back to country, then to cabaret and back to country and so on was really funny and all class.
Cole and O’Donovan are both great singers and make everything look easy – accomplished performers who exude the confidence born of years of experience.
Great to listen to, great to watch, and packed full of positive energy.
