[CHILDREN’S/Music ~ SA PREMIERE – VIC]

The Parlour at Gluttony, Sat 15 Feb.

There were quite a few young fairies in the audience of this show complete with fairy costumes and fairy wings. It wasn’t mandatory, but the girls aged from two – eight who were dressed up certainly seemed at home in The Fairy Wonderland. (Not that the rest of us were made to feel anything else but welcome.)

While it is largely about the songs and dances of the Fairies who live in Wonderland, the show is taken on a different direction by the entrance of Fairy Jack, who responds to us learning how to sing the Fairy Call for help. Jack is clearly everything that Fairy Jasmine is not, unconfident, uncoordinated, ungraceful etc. etc. and the story becomes that of Jack’s training to become a fully-fledged fairy – eventually to be awarded his own magic wand.

There is a show along the way, songs to sing with parts to sing along with and plenty of dancing. There are also a few puns sent sailing over the kids’ heads to keep the adults in the room entertained. There were a few volunteers and Jack seemed to go out of his way to pick kids that weren’t quite so cool or didn’t quite fit in. Amusingly, my young Mr 4 went home with a little amulet of fairy dust around his neck that Ms 7 so coveted! And sceptical Grandad got to dance with Fairy Jasmine – he’s now a true believer!

The Fairy Wonderland is playing at The Parlour in Gluttony right up to the end of the Fringe!
