[CIRCUS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE ~ SA PREMIERE ~ SA]

Gluttony – Empyrean, Fri 9 Mar.

Combing a rock ‘n’ roll, steampunk and Goth vibe, local troupe Olio Circus presents their South Australian premiere show The Otherworld, featuring acts inspired by legends, fairy tales and mythical creatures that lurk within the shadows.

Created and directed by four female, multidisciplinary performance artists (Chantelle Reed, Natalie Tran, Melissa Johns and Ellyse Bunney) Olio Circus brings to the stage an exciting and intimate circus production, blending it all with live original music and some moments that will have you gasping at the wonderment, danger and artistry on display.

The show begins with the entrance of three women, illuminated in iridescent chiffon capes, like butterflies, followed by what resembles a Celtic binding ritual, adding to the earthy tone of the show. Within these small moments the handful of performers adeptly set the aesthetic for their dreamy and wondrous show. Although, at times, it is a little rough around the edges, the skill demonstrated by the performers trumps any misstep or lack of gracefulness.

Accompanied on guitar along with original musical creations by Scott Reed, The Otherworld has all the circus acts you could want; aerial work, acrobatics, a contortionist and even a fire twirling female faun. Olio Circus is an ensemble of masterful and skilled men and women and is certainly one to keep an eye on in the years ahead, as I’ve no doubt they’ll continue to grow, finesse and return season after season.
