[COMEDY/STAND UP ~ NSW]

Gluttony – The Bally, Sat 9 Mar.

After a sold-out worldwide tour in 2018 the award winning comedy duo and identical twins Benjamin and James Stevenson bring their brand new show The Stevenson Experience: Takes One To Know One to the 2019 Adelaide Fringe.

As both James and Benjamin point out at the top of the show they have no major theme or overarching pretentious ‘message’ to their comedy. However, his could be a tactic to sell themselves short because these charming, acerbic and utterly hilarious larrikins are relatable and incredibly skilful in iterating political and social points of view to the audience.

The show is a blend of structured banter, songs and comedy, with moments of audience participation and interaction, which they use to their advantage. What better way to find out which twin is more attractive, talented or the crowd’s favourite than taking opinions from the audience. There is also such an ease to their comedy, nothing feels forced, and moments of natural improvisation only add to their appeal.

Their comedy and overall sense of humour is both self-deprecating and self-complimenting in equal and entertaining measure. Barbs, campy mockery and sassy retorts are aimed squarely at each other and in a way only a family member can get away with. The highlights and stars of the show are the songs, which are littered with sardonic and witty lyrics and at times sung at a remarkably rapid fire pace.

It is clearly evident the two twin comedians are having fun, enjoying every second in front of an audience. They are so in sync and so effortlessly nimble in terms of their comical back and forth one can’t help but be swept up by their wisecracking charm.

5 stars
