The 2016 Adelaide Festival has ensured families with children are well catered for. The Young King is a playful, magical experience that can be appreciated by everyone eight to eighty years old, especially those that like a more innovative and interactive encounter.
Written by Oscar Wilde, The Young King was published in the 1891 second collection of The Happy Prince and Other Tales as part of four fairy tales named A House Of Pomegranates. It is a fable-like tale of a boy who was raised as a goat-herder, ignorant to the fact that he is the only heir to the throne due to his mother’s death. His Grandfather is old and dying so the boy is brought to the palace and eagerly awaits the arrival of his crown, sceptre and robe. But in the night prior to his coronation he has three influential dreams about each gift.
The story is told by two brilliant actors, Tim Overton who mainly plays the young King, and Jacqy Phillips who plays an array of characters in the dreams as well as the old King. The two also integrate puppetry and make certain the ingenious set by Wendy Todd is such a vital part of the storytelling. Composer Quincy Grant ensures the music reflects the mood and language of Oscar Wilde’s story perfectly as he plays alongside the action.
Arrive to the venue early for a wonderful unanticipated experience of being separated into groups with different gifts to bring the King and different crowns to make; for example, we were Rough Fisher-Folk of the North who wore blue and brought pearls for the new King. Adelaide-based theatre company, Slingsby, has transformed the old Dazzeland site into a maze of surprises. A wonderful experience for young and old.
