Royal Croquet Club – The Parlour, Sat 25 Feb.
The Royal Croquet Club may have moved location this year, but it still has ensured many quality offerings for the 2017 Adelaide Fringe. One of these is the sweet, honest cabaret offering from NIDA and Gaulier-trained actor Adriano Cappelletta. This Boy’s In Love is a one-man gay romantic comedy about finding love and then the more challenging task of committing to that person. Adriano claims he has never been in love, but this all changed when he met Felix: a human rights lawyer, who speaks like Hugh Grant and wears Italian suits.
The original script is refreshing to hear, wonderfully written and performed in a heartfelt and quaint way. It would have been tempting to introduce known songs to break up the dialogue, but the story flowed so much more proficiently with original music and the lyrics were playful adding to the charm of the show.
At today’s matinee performance the audience appeared to be engrossed in the story and songs about past boyfriends and ‘zombie gays’ in Sydney who tan, workout, bleach, party-hard and generally all look and act like one another. The physical theatre elements, energetic dancing on drugs at ARQ Nightclub and the audience participation was also well received.
Adriano Cappelletta presents a beautifully honest cabaret absolutely worth checking out.
