The Goodwood Institute, Fri 6 Mar.
Cheesy pick-up lines, “negging”, and crotch shots are all part of the current dating experience. Navigating the ups and downs of contemporary dating, Tinder Surprise is a new play at the Goodwood Institute following two young Adelaidians finding love (or at least normalcy) among an assortment of misfits, crazies and all-around weirdos.
Using the popular dating app, Tinder, where true love (or at least a hook-up) is only a swipe to the right away, the play also explores what it means to be a young adult finding their way in love and life in today’s technology-based world. The characters are given friendly advice that anyone who’s dated will have heard before -“Be funny, but not too funny!” “Don’t be picky, but have some standards!” – all of which end up not being too helpful at all, with hilarious results.
The ensemble cast was great, especially the barkeep – a fairy godmother of sorts who stole the show. While some scenes of endless bad dates did begin to feel a bit endless, it was a charming story that anyone who’s dated, with or without technology, can relate to.
