The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Corona Theatre, Wed 17 Feb
My test audience and I set off to enjoy an hour of silliness with a bit of acrobatics thrown in and that was certainly what was delivered by the three delightful guys that make up Trash Test Dummies. It’s an unusual show in so far as they don’t speak much, but their actions speak volumes and their interactions with the audience are a delight.
We all laughed plenty of times at the slapstick comedy and the inventive ways of using rubbish bins. All three performers are multitalented which makes the show varied, going from juggling to acrobatics, from drumming to dancing, using music inventively to transition from one part to the next. Hat twirling while dancing to New York, New York was one to please the adults.
There is never a dull moment. The show manages to tell the story of lasting friendship, even when you sometimes annoy each other. Surprisingly, the show strays into quite serious territory with a bomb scare scene, which is ultimately very funny, but which makes the children think.
My six-year-old gave Trash Test Dummies five stars but the nine-year-old settled for three stars, while the twelve-year-old felt a bit too old for it all even though he did laugh. We couldn’t get the image of the harmonica stuck sideways in a stretched mouth out of our heads!
It’s a clever and charming show that will delight audiences of 5 to 11 year olds.
