[BOOK REVIEW]

Adam Kay (Hachette Australia: Trapeze) 2022, 274pp, RRP $32.99 (paperback); $55.00 (hardback); $39.99 (audiobook)

Brit Kay’s follow-up to his bestseller This Is Going To Hurt (recently turned into an English TV series starring Ben Whishaw) is a frequently (but not always) hilarious account of (mostly) his life once he stopped being an underappreciated, appallingly stressed doctor and became a full-time writer and comedian. A far less well-paid gig, as he keeps on reminding us.

With harsh, libellous sentiments meaning that certain key medical people are known by Marvel-related pseudonyms (meaning that he tangles with Dr. Stark and Dr. Pym herein), this is, at times, surprisingly self-deprecating and queasily personal, right down to his brush with an eating disorder (all he had to do was continually spit out all his food) and, shockingly, what happened to him in a gay sauna in Auckland back in 2012.

And yet, somehow, even as he recalls such terrible trauma, he still manages to be funny…ish.
