The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – The Spiegeltent, Wed 16 Feb

Hans is a born entertainer. Maybe not flamboyant enough for Las Vegas but certainly enough to light up The Spiegeltent. Resplendent in sparkling salacious costumes he prances up and down the catwalk singing and dancing with his dancing girls, The Lucky Bitches, telling us all how gorgeous he is and how wonderful we are. Liberal sprinklings of the F word and risqué humour are delivered with a sense of joy and fun.

His interaction with the audience is an integral part of the show and he is oh so good at it. Straight guys, old ladies, a Catholic schoolgirl and a row of kids out with their parents all come in for good natured ribbing and somehow no one takes offence. He has a wonderful ability to behave in what in other contexts may be deemed offensive and yet not offend, because nothing is taken seriously. It’s all taken in a healthy spirit of self-deprecation and fun.

During a break for a costume change we were treated to a beautiful unravelling of a cocoon high above the tent that revealed a graceful female acrobat who performed an enchanting aerial dance. The Lucky Bitches – Hans’ Las Vegas dancing girls – looked ravishing in feathers and fantails throughout, and musically the whole show skips along smoothly courtesy of is band, The Ungrateful Bastards!

Kylie, Madonna and Peter Allen were all featured as part of the musical fare, and the legendary Liberace was brought back to life for those who could remember who he was. A typical Vegas wedding of two lucky members of the audience was handled with sensitive mockery, but was perhaps a tad longer than it needed to be.

Everybody had a ball. Despite, or perhaps because of, his flaunting sexuality, and teetering near the edge of outrageous, Hans manages to deliver a show full of fun and joy that I think, believe it or not, could be sold as fun for all the family. Quite a feat! Great entertainment. Hans is a star!
